Dyslexia Advocate! By Kelli Sandman-Hurley is an excellent source of information that I recommend to all my parents. It is a practical, straightforward guide for parents and other advocates who want to help a child with dyslexia navigate the U.S. public education system. It breaks down key laws – especially the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and shows how to use them effectively to secure the appropriate support and service a dyslexic learner needs. Kelli does not mince words and writes in a clear and supportive manner. This book is a reminder that the parent is in charge of their child’s education and not to be intimidated by administrators and red tape.
The book uses real-world examples to explain how to communicate with schools, prepare for Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings, develop effective plans and follow through once services are in place. It’s written in clear, assessable language so parents don’t have to wrestle with legal jargon or complex bureaucracy alone. You know your child better than anyone else and this book is a great asset to have.
